Most in-demand DevOps skills 2026 — data from 185+ canonical skills

This report is derived from Sharpen.cv's canonical skill graph — 185+ DevOps and SRE skills with co-occurrence data from real job descriptions. It captures which skills appear most frequently in JDs, which skills appear together, and how the landscape has shifted from 2024 to 2026.

The dominant tier: universal expectations

These skills appear in the majority of mid-to-senior DevOps and SRE job descriptions. Not having them is a filter failure, not a differentiator:

• Kubernetes — Ubiquitous. EKS is the most commonly named flavour, followed by GKE and AKS. Even JDs for non-K8s-primary roles typically expect basic familiarity.
• Terraform — The IaC standard. CloudFormation holds on in AWS-exclusive shops; CDK is growing but Terraform dominates.
• AWS — The most named cloud provider by a significant margin. Multi-cloud JDs have grown but AWS-primary remains the majority.
• Docker — Table stakes for container workflows. Listed less frequently than Kubernetes but implied by it.
• GitHub Actions — Overtook Jenkins in greenfield JD mentions in 2024 and has maintained that lead.

The high-signal tier: strong differentiators

These skills appear in a significant minority of JDs and carry high weight when present — they indicate the organisation is operating at platform-scale:

• ArgoCD / GitOps — Appeared in around 30% of senior DevOps JDs in 2025 and continues to grow. FluxCD appears in about half that share.
• Prometheus + Grafana — The de-facto open-source observability stack. OpenTelemetry mentions have grown significantly alongside these.
• Helm — Strongly co-occurs with Kubernetes and ArgoCD. Almost universal in K8s-heavy environments.
• HashiCorp Vault — Secrets management appears explicitly in JDs that mention GitOps or security compliance.
• Python — The most requested scripting language in DevOps JDs, ahead of Go for generalist roles (though Go leads in platform engineering).

The fastest-growing cluster: platform engineering

Skills associated with internal developer platforms grew significantly between 2024 and 2026:

• Backstage — The platform engineering IDP of choice. Mentions roughly doubled year-over-year.
• Crossplane — Infrastructure-as-code via Kubernetes Custom Resources. Niche but growing, especially in platform roles.
• OpenTelemetry — The observability collection standard. Now frequently listed alongside Prometheus rather than as an alternative.
• eBPF — Appears in advanced Kubernetes networking and security JDs. Signals depth rather than breadth.

Skills with declining mention frequency

Some skills that were strong JD signals in 2023 have declined:

• Jenkins — Still widely deployed but declining in new JDs. Appears most in enterprise and financial services JDs.
• Ansible — Remains relevant in traditional infrastructure environments but rarely appears as a primary requirement in cloud-native JDs.
• Chef and Puppet — Significantly reduced. Legacy replacement is the primary context for these skills.

Skill co-occurrence: what appears together

The strongest co-occurrence pairs in DevOps JDs (skills that appear together significantly more than chance):

• Kubernetes + Helm (0.87 correlation)
• Kubernetes + ArgoCD (0.71)
• Terraform + AWS (0.82)
• Prometheus + Grafana (0.91)
• ArgoCD + GitOps (0.88)

This analysis is based on Sharpen.cv's canonical skill graph, built from 185+ skills with aliases derived from real DevOps and SRE job descriptions. Co-occurrence data reflects JD analysis across a sample of 1,000+ DevOps-category job postings analysed through the Sharpen.cv platform between January and May 2026. This is a preliminary dataset — we will publish quarterly updates with larger sample sizes.
