AWS DevOps resume examples for cloud engineers

AWS appears in more DevOps job descriptions than any other cloud platform. But 'AWS experience' is meaningless without specifics — recruiters want to know which services you've operated, at what scale, and whether you've handled the hard parts: cost, security, and cross-account governance.

What recruiters look for

  • Service depth over breadth — listing every AWS service weakens your resume. Focus on the services central to your work: compute (EC2, EKS, Lambda, Fargate), data (RDS, DynamoDB, S3), networking (VPC, ALB, Route 53), and the specific managed services your team owned.

  • Infrastructure-as-code for AWS — Terraform, CDK, or CloudFormation. Hiring managers assume you don't click through the console for production changes; show your IaC tooling.

  • Cost and governance at scale — Reserved Instances, Savings Plans, Cost Explorer, SCPs, and cross-account IAM. Engineering organisations with real AWS bills care deeply about cost culture.

  • Security posture — IAM least-privilege design, VPC segmentation, GuardDuty and Security Hub, and compliance evidence (SOC2, PCI, or comparable) if applicable. Security-aware AWS engineers command a premium.

How to phrase it — weak vs strong

Weak

Managed AWS infrastructure for our company

Strong

Operated a multi-account AWS environment (14 accounts, AWS Organizations) serving 50M API calls/day; reduced monthly cloud spend by $40K through Savings Plans and right-sizing using Compute Optimizer recommendations

Weak

Set up CI/CD pipelines on AWS

Strong

Built a GitOps deployment pipeline using GitHub Actions + ECR + ECS Fargate; reduced average deployment time from 22 minutes to 6 minutes; added automated rollback on CloudWatch alarm breach

Weak

Worked with AWS Lambda for serverless functions

Strong

Architected an event-driven data pipeline using Lambda + SQS + DynamoDB handling 500K events/hour at peak; achieved p99 latency under 200ms with zero cold-start issues via provisioned concurrency

Weak

Improved security on our AWS accounts

Strong

Implemented AWS Security Hub with CIS benchmark controls across 14 accounts; reduced critical findings from 340 to 12 over 6 months; automated remediation for 60% of recurring misconfigurations using Lambda-triggered Config rules

Frequently asked questions

Should I list AWS certifications on my DevOps resume?

Yes. AWS certifications validate breadth and clear ATS filters that require them. Place them in a dedicated certifications section with the full name and certification code (SAA-C03, DOP-C02). The Solutions Architect Associate and DevOps Engineer Professional are the most widely recognised for DevOps roles.

Is 'AWS' in my skills list enough for ATS matching?

No. Many JDs mention specific AWS services (EKS, Lambda, RDS, S3) rather than 'AWS' generically. Sharpen.cv maps all major AWS service aliases — if a JD asks for EKS and you list Kubernetes + EKS experience in your bullets, it scores the match correctly.

How do I show AWS experience without certifications?

Strong, quantified bullet points outperform certifications in most hiring pipelines. Show the services you ran in production, the scale, and the outcomes. If you want a credential to close gaps, the AWS Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) can be prepared for in a week and signals baseline familiarity.
