DevOps skills in demand for 2026 — what the data shows

Which DevOps and SRE skills are most requested in 2026 job descriptions? An analysis from Sharpen.cv's skill graph covering 185+ canonical DevOps tools and practices.

Every year the same question comes up in DevOps communities: what skills should I focus on? The honest answer isn't a ranked list — it's a map of what combinations of skills appear in the JDs you're targeting. But some patterns hold broadly.

We looked at job descriptions run through Sharpen.cv in early 2026. A few patterns stood out.

The universal expectations in 2026

These are no longer differentiators — they're baseline requirements for any mid-to-senior DevOps or SRE role:

  • Kubernetes — EKS/GKE/AKS in most cases. Production K8s is assumed at this point.
  • Terraform — The IaC standard. If you only have CloudFormation, learn Terraform.
  • AWS — Still the most named cloud. Multi-cloud experience is a bonus, not a requirement.
  • GitHub Actions or GitLab CI — Jenkins still appears but in declining share of new JDs.
  • Prometheus + Grafana — The monitoring baseline. Datadog is an alternative in enterprise JDs.

The growing tier: GitOps and platform engineering

These skills appeared significantly more frequently in 2026 than 2024:

  • ArgoCD / GitOps— A strong differentiator that's becoming a baseline requirement in cloud-native shops.
  • OpenTelemetry — Increasingly listed alongside Prometheus as the collection standard.
  • Go — Language mentions have grown, particularly in platform engineering and SRE roles where writing operators matters.
  • Backstage — Internal developer platform tool. Niche but growing rapidly.

What to focus on if you're upskilling

If you're choosing where to invest time in 2026, the K8s + ArgoCD + Terraform + observability stack covers most of what employers are asking for. Already solid on AWS + Terraform? The next logical step is GitOps (ArgoCD) and a proper monitoring practice (Prometheus/Grafana).

For engineers targeting SRE roles specifically: the SLO/error budget practice and a track record of blameless incident reviews matter as much as the tooling. Kubernetes knowledge gets you in the room; reliability thinking is what keeps you there.
