Ansible resume examples for automation engineers

Ansible remains widely used for configuration management, application deployment, and ad-hoc automation — especially in environments with mixed on-premise and cloud footprints. Strong Ansible experience signals breadth of operational knowledge, but the resume signal depends on showing real-world scope and role architecture discipline.

What recruiters look for

  • Playbook and role architecture — well-structured roles vs. monolithic playbooks. Engineers who understand Ansible Galaxy roles, idempotency discipline, and inventory patterns stand out over those who wrote one-off scripts.

  • Scale of managed infrastructure — server count, number of playbooks or roles maintained, and whether inventory was static files or dynamic (AWS EC2 inventory, VMware, etc.).

  • AWX or Ansible Tower — if you've run Ansible at scale, the control plane matters. Experience with scheduling, RBAC, and credential management in AWX is a seniority indicator.

  • Integration with other tooling — Ansible called from Terraform, in CI/CD pipelines, or for bootstrapping Kubernetes nodes before Helm or ArgoCD takes over. Show the ecosystem context.

How to phrase it — weak vs strong

Weak

Used Ansible to configure servers

Strong

Managed configuration for 400 bare-metal and VM nodes using Ansible; structured as 30 reusable roles published to internal Galaxy; achieved idempotent configuration across RHEL 8 and Ubuntu 22.04 fleets

Weak

Wrote Ansible playbooks for application deployment

Strong

Automated zero-downtime application deployments across 5-node clusters using Ansible rolling_update strategy; integrated with GitHub Actions to trigger on PR merge; reduced deployment errors by 60%

Weak

Set up AWX for our Ansible automation

Strong

Deployed AWX managing 250 scheduled jobs; configured RBAC allowing 4 dev teams to run pre-approved playbooks without SSH access to production servers; integrated with HashiCorp Vault for credential injection

Weak

Wrote Ansible scripts for server hardening

Strong

Developed CIS Level 1 hardening playbook for RHEL 8 using Ansible; passed SOC2 Type II audit with zero findings related to OS configuration; reused across 3 teams managing 180 servers

Frequently asked questions

Is Ansible still relevant in a Kubernetes-first world?

Yes, especially for infrastructure below the cluster level: bare-metal provisioning, OS hardening, non-containerised application config, and legacy environments. Many shops also use Ansible alongside Terraform to handle post-provisioning configuration. If you have Ansible experience, it's worth listing.

What is the difference between Ansible and Terraform on a resume?

Terraform is for provisioning infrastructure (creating cloud resources), Ansible is for configuring what's inside them (OS settings, application deployment, file management). Many roles require both. List them as separate skills with separate bullets to get credit for both.

Should I list ansible-lint or Molecule on my resume?

If you used them, yes — they signal code quality discipline. ansible-lint and Molecule (for role testing) appear in JDs that expect production-grade Ansible. A brief mention in a bullet about your role-authoring workflow carries weight with experienced hiring managers.
